Donuts on the Lodge is a track inspired by one of the city’s most notorious expressions of underground car culture. It is built around audio captured during the viral 2019 incident where drivers temporarily stopped traffic on the John C. Lodge Freeway while cars performed donuts. The track transforms a moment of raw Detroit street energy into a tribute from one underground culture to another. The concept draws a parallel between Detroit’s underground racing and underground dance scenes where machines become instruments, public spaces become temporary stages, and collective energy becomes the performance. We acknowledge the dangerous circumstances of the original event, but to us Donuts on the Lodge is a cultural hat tip. It is a recognition of the creativity, individuality and rebellious spirit that have long existed within Detroit’s automotive underground.
